Who is God?
Saul on the road to Damascus, was breathing threats and murder against the disciples of Jesus. Saul, full of hate and religiosity, went after the disciples for to kill them. But suddenly a light from heaven shone around him and he had an encounter with the living God. Saul cried out “Who are You, Lord?” He thought that he was serving God, but he was actually persecuting God. He thought that he knew who God was, but he had in fact no clue. To answer his question the Lord said: I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. The religious leaders hated Jesus, but little did they know that God was just like Jesus. Religious people has always taught others what to do, and never done it themselves. But everything they’ve done, they’ve done to be seen by men. Jesus said that people like that, hinder others to get to know God (Matthew 23). Colossians 2:8-10 “Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ. For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power."
Whatever you see Jesus do in the gospels, that’s what God does. Whatever you don’t see Jesus do in the gospels, that’s what God doesn’t do. That’s why Jesus said that He could do nothing of himself, but only what he saw His Father do (John 5:19). That’s also why the bible declares that no one has seen God but that Jesus has declared who God is (John 1:18).
So if you want to know who God is, take a look at Jesus:
John 1:1-5: "In the beginning was the Word (Jesus), and the Word (Jesus) was with God, and the Word (Jesus) was God. He (Jesus) was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him (Jesus), and without Him (Jesus) nothing was made that was made. In Him (Jesus) was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it."
God is love, so Love has no beginning and no end. God’s love is outside time and space. It’s God’s unchanging nature. Therefore God loves you no matter what. He loved you even before you were born. He loved you when you rebelled against him. He loved you when you hated him. He has always loved you and nothing can stop Him from loving you. That’s why God’s love is personal.
Jesus, according to Hebrews 1:3, is the express image of God’s person. God created us to have a personal relationship with us and the only way to have a relationship with God is through Jesus Christ. He’s the the way, the truth, and the life. No one can get to know God, except through Jesus.
Saul did not know who God was, but after that personal encounter with Him, he wrote “it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.” (Galatians 2:20)
